Episode II - Nestor
Orlando Bloom and Robert Downey Jr. share a dirty joke between takes on top of the Martello Tower, Barta Rock, Dalkey, Co. Dublin on the 26th August 2008.
Sean Murphy and Natasia enjoy a break between takes on top of the Martello Tower at Bartra Rock in Dalkey, Co Dublin on 26th August 2008.
Fresh from Cannes and an acclaimed appearance in Steve McQueen’s award-winning directorial debut ‘Hunger’, shot on location in Northern Ireland, actor Rory Mullen.
Today we gratefully received permission to use the Martello Tower at Bartra Rock as location for exterior and interior shots. SS showed me around the Tower which is only accessible via a ladder. It is in absolutely fabulous condition, having recently been completely re-pointed.
SS is an architect. She told me that the Towers are not uniform in size. The one on Dalkey Island, for example, is much larger than the one on Bartra Rock. She thought that it may cause problems for continuity.
Not only are the Martello Towers not uniform, there are no two constructed exactly the same. Inside the circular granite living area is completely empty and very dark. Light comes from the doorway and the two windows. All the windows in the Towers have glass to keep out the pigeons.
Inside to the right the small narrow spiral staircase winds up to the roof.
This frame will make a beautiful first shot as Oliver Mulligan invokes the Primum Mobile. The gunest and the parapet and all the stonework is in fantastic condition, but then, theres the view...
...Which is actually better than the view from the Joyce Tower, which is the next one North.
Today we recorded the audio commentary for Part 17 Ithaca. Here is a shot of Sean and Marcus having some intimate fun in the booth.
Sean looks the split of Robert Downey Jr and Marcus is a dead ringer for Orlando Bloom. I explained to the guys that those actors were actually my first choice but that, since they weren't available on those dates, I was going to use them because of their stunning physical similarities.
JAF played a blinder on audio and we recorded over an hour of improv to cover the six minute commenatry section.
"Nowadays, all are famous, because Fame itself has become ephemeral in order to escape from the makers of ramshackle immortalities."

By fortunate coincidence, last weekend, both myself and Sean happened to be in Connemara.
Today, Sean emailed a photograph taken by his freind at Renvyle House, in front of a print of Augustus John's portrait of Oliver St. John Gogarty.
The resemblance is uncanny - especially the sparkle in the eyes and the hairline. All we need to do is shave Seans side-locks.
